I recently found out about a new campaign that Avon have launched to raise awareness of domestic violence in the UK. It is a very straightforward campaign that anyone can get involved in. You can join in by sharing a "shh" selfie on instagram or twitter with the hashtag #wallofsilence. Each "shhh" selfie that is shared during the campaign will form a brick wall of silence to end the silence that surrounds domestic abuse. Dometic violence affects one in four women in the UK with many victims afraid to speak out for fear of further abuse so they just end up suffering in silence. It is also not just physical violence but also emotional and psychological control. Anything that prevents you from being the real you. The statistics are quite shocking and yet not much focus seems to be around this topic that affects so many people.
For each "shhh" selfie that is shared, Avon will donate £1 to be split between Women's Aid and Refuge. Since the launch, thousands of pictures have been posted online with many celebrities getting involved. I think it is a great opportunity to raise awareness of this crime and raise funds for the charities. The selfies with the hashtag will automatically be uploaded to the wall at www.avon.uk.com/wallofsilence. You are also able to donate £5 by texting WALL to 70500. Avon has donated nearly $58 million to support women in nearly 50 countries.
I think for a very long time, domestic violence has been viewed as that crime that happens behind closed doors so "it's none of my business". However, it can happen to any of us at any time (men included). Therefore, I think it is definitely a cause I want to be supporting.
Will you be joining in?
Thanks for reading!
