Makeup & The Gym ~ To Wear Or Not To Wear?

Now ladies, this topic may hit a nerve with some of us...but I think it's an interesting topic nonetheless. I was recently asked what my thoughts were on wearing makeup to a workout session at the gym. I thought I would write about it as it's a great way to encourage debate around the subject and to find out your opinion.

I think when people think of makeup and the gym, the first image that comes to mind is one of makeup running down your face, sweat and panda eyes. But that isn't always the case. A study revealed that 7 in 10 women wear makeup to the gym. Yes, you read that correctly. This could include anything from mascara, lipgloss, foundation to a full face of makeup. Now how many women do you see at the gym with makeup running down their faces? So they must be doing something right.

There are many reasons why  women wear makeup to the gym and some women view this statistic as insanely high. Some have said.."Why would you bother about what you look like when you're going to sweat it all out anyway??!" or "..There's another one with her face full of makeup, I'm guessing shes here to people watch rather than workout!". Now my issue with the latter statement is, surely when you go  to the gym, you're there to focus on YOUR workout, not what someone has on their face. Why are you so bothered?

Like I said before, there are many reasons why a woman may turn up to the gym wearing makeup. The most obvious would be if you're coming straight from work and you can't be bothered to take it all off before you begin your workout. There are also women who only feel comfortable if they have makeup on. Obviously the ideal situation I guess would be to let your skin breathe whilst you sweat those carbs off. However, the way I see it is, each to their own. I wear makeup to gym as I love wearing makeup. As simple as that. Once I've finished my session, as long as I cleanse, tone and moisturise properly, I'm good to go. Definitely remember to wash your makeup off after the gym as makeup and sweat create the optimum environment for bacteria on your skin which results in clogged pores and pimples.

A few tips:

1. Wear waterproof mascara to avoid panda eyes.

2. A tinted moisturiser or bb cream can provide good coverage without you being worried about your foundation dripping down your face.

3. Lip butter / lip balm which can add some colour to your lips without the need for a lipstick.

So... what are your thoughts? Do you wear makeup to the gym?

Thanks for reading!!

  1. Great post! I wear makeup to the gym...but I have to say this is because I go at lunchtime - the gym is across the road from my office. I have to apply makeup in the morning to go to work, and its with that same face that I go to the gym. If I was working out at home or going from home to the gym I would probably only put concealer on.....
It doesnt bother me if someone has makeup on the gym or not, its their face, let them do what they want. I have noticed some girls in my gym pile it on - I dont know if thats their "normal" makeup face or not but like I said, it doesn't bother me.

  2. I do most of the time! I'm a student and usually go during the day when i've finished morning lectures. I'm not about to wipe it all of just to not be judged at the gym. Even if I go in the morning I wear eyeliner on my bottom lids, because I feel more comfortable doing that xxx

  3. I never wear make up to the gym, but similarly to what Grace said - I work from home, so it's OK for me to go to the gym in the morning barefaced and when I get home apply some make up. :)

  4. If I go to the gym, I'm usually going in between college so I will always wear mascara at least, & under eye concealer. However I could happily go in with it on or without!

  5. When I first started going to the gym I was a very big person and never wore any. I used to be quite amused by the girls who go in there ready for a night on the town. Now I am 100lbs lighter, ironically I wouldnt be seen in there (or out in the street) without my face done. I dont wear it heavy but I always make sure I have foundation, mascara and eyeliner on. Its more for me than anyone else though, it makes me feel more attractive and less self conscious.

  6. I can't believe that THAT many women wear make-up to the gym! I do wear water proof mascara when I go but thats it. Its a good time to let your skin breath whilst you get a sweat on :)

  7. I don't go to the gym, but I workout at home and most of the times (not always) I workout without makeup. Becase I always end up dripping in sweat like a pig and wipe my face into my top and it can get dirty :D
But whatever you like. I prefer my skin to breathe. And I also try to do my workouts in the morning so I can do my daily makeup right after. So, I don't have to do another makeup after a workout if I go somewhere :)
    Nice post though :)

  8. Great post! I only wear makeup while working out if I had it on already from earlier in the day but I never put makeup on to go to the gym.

  9. I tend to drag myself to the gym straight from work and as I go to classes I am running to a schedule so I don't have time to take my make up off. On the rare occassion that I do have some extra time before my classes then the make up goes off.

  19. like others, i go to the gym after i'm done with my classes. i don't bother to take off my makeup when i get there. if i'm coming straight from my house to go to the gym, i wear concealer, a little powder, and mascara. it's just how i feel comfortable leaving the house. i do make sure that as soon as i come home i wash all off the makeup/sweat off, though.

  20. @Monica ~ I agree! The best thing is to ensure that your makeup is washed off as soon as you get in from the gym! :)

  21. I'm also a makeup wearer but because of going from work. I take it off for swimming but it doesn't bother me for the actual gym other than bright lipstick, I always take that off before the gym. If its the weekend and I've not d makeup I just conceal and put mascara on and that's it :).

  22. I do wear my make-up to the gym - just because I don't tend to leave the house without it! I mainly go in the evenings and as long you cleanse properly afterwards - as you say - it's fine. I do know women at the gym that prefer to go either completely bare faced or fully made up - glitter lip-gloss the lot! Again - as you say - each to their own! xx
